AHISA SUBMISSION

Joint Select Committee on Social Media and Australian Society

28 June 2024

Inquiry into the influence and impacts of social media on Australian society

AHISA’s submission to the Select Committee’s inquiry explores the roles of government, social media companies, parents and schools in addressing the impacts of social media on children and young people.

AHISA argues that although the research suggests social media can bring positive benefits, the negative impacts have far-reaching implications for young people, including exacerbating mental health and body image issues, increasing opportunities for cyberbullying, and increasing distraction and addictive behaviours. All of these issues are adding to the workload of schools as they support and equip children and young people.

AHISA encourages the Select Committee to consider the most suitable way of managing the risks associated with social media, while also providing schools, parents and young people with tools that can educate, guide and empower.
